I remember receiving my first waterbed as a child; it was given to me as my first real bed and was meant to signify my transition from boyhood to young adulthood. Of course, none of that mattered to me at the time – I was just thrilled to be getting something new and different. Knowing that I was sleeping on a bed of heated water was very exciting at that young age. I had a bed that was different from all the rest, complete with its own fancy cutout headboard where I could store my alarm clock and other necessities. Although I’ve since moved on from that bed, I will always remember it for the unique comfort it provided and the warmth it gave me throughout those cold winter nights. Although waterbeds have faded somewhat in popularity since their heyday in the 1960’s and 70’s, there are still people out there that wouldn’t sleep on anything else. For them a waterbed provides a level of comfort that a traditional mattress cannot match, regardless of how fancy or expensive it might be. For those that don’t want the traditional waterbed experience, there are now beds that appear like “normal” mattresses on the outside that contain a layer of water beneath. These are referred to as a soft side waterbed mattress and are becoming increasingly popular.
Sleeping on a waterbed mattress is a strange, yet comforting experience. Waterbed mattresses are constructed from vinyl and contain a fill hole where the water is placed. A specialized heater heats the water to the temperature of your choice, typically between 80 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Because the waterbed matress provides localized heat it’s a great way to save money on your heating bill. You will no longer need to heat the surrounding environment when sleeping on a waterbed. If you’re interested in making the transition to this unique sleep experience there are a few things you should consider along with your purchase.
When setting up a new waterbed or when replacing the existing water in your current bed it’s important to condition the water. Water conditioners treat the water in your mattress so that algae or other undesirables don’t form. The conditioner will also keep the vinyl itself nice and supple. Apart from water conditioner it’s also important to purchase bed sheets that are designed specifically for waterbeds. Because waterbeds are unique in their shape, ordinary bed sheets simply won’t cut it. Instead, you will want to purchase sheets that are designed to stay tucked in beneath your waterbed mattress. One thing that I always found to be sort of gross was the tendency for dust, lint and other debris to accumulate on the sides and beneath the mattress itself. A great way to prevent these things from accumulating is to purchase a waterbed mattress pad. Waterbed mattress pads also prevent body oils from contacting the vinyl, which can cause degradation of the mattress if left to accumulate.
If you’re looking for a fun and exciting sleep option then look no further than a waterbed mattress. Whether for your child or for yourself, a waterbed provides a sleep experience like no other, and one that you’ll surely remember for a lifetime.
