Going to college can be a very exciting and life-changing time in your life, but it is not without its share of inconveniences. While the independence and social aspects of living in a dorm can be great fun, this time can also be spoiled by an incompatible roommate.

Dorms are great but if you get stuck with the wrong roommate, you’re in trouble. Even your best friend from high school can become annoying when you have to live in the same room together day in and day out. Perhaps your roommate is your polar opposite: you’re clean and she’s messy, you’re quiet and he’s loud, you sleep til noon and she’s an early riser. Maybe she has a boyfriend who never seems to go home. Or maybe you are just the quiet type and don’t really like sharing space with anyone. This is where folding room screens can come in handy. You can buy a cheap screen divider and put it in the middle of your room, making a separate space for each of you and giving yourself some privacy at the same time.

However, part of the appeal of dorm life is the chance to decorate your space. A big folding privacy screen can look a little obtrusive, but with a few clever tricks, you can use it as yet another opportunity to show off your own unique style. If you’re artistic, you could paint a design on it. Stencils would work on most varieties of decorative folding screens, especially wooden ones. You could also use the decorative vinyl stickers that are currently in style. And if you’re more cerebral than creative, you still have some options. You could paint your side of the divider in your favorite color or glue on some pictures of friends and family you miss from home.

Putting up a folding screen in your dorm is not only a great way to keep the peace between you and your roommate but also a great chance to show off your own personality and style.
