At Bedroom Decor Tips we love Roman Blinds, both for their ease of use and tailored look. If you have sloped ceilings, Roman Blinds are a necessity, but like all window treatments they can be expensive; that is, unless you do it yourself. There are a few very simple steps that we will outline in this article that will have you installing your own Roman blinds in not time.
First, decide if you want your Roman Blinds mounted inside the window or on the wall. Next, decide if you want a straight shade (when fully extended, the shade is flat and smooth) or a gathered shade (the shade has a gathered look even when closed.) Finally, decide how many gathers or pulls you want. The average window uses 3-4 pulls while a long window may require 5-6.
To find out the amount of fabric you’ll need, add 2” all around for a seam allowance. You’ll need matching thread, cording (4 times the length of your fabric), and plastic rings, 2 for each pull and wide enough to thread the cording through. You can use fusible tape for your hemming, but it will still be necessary to hand sew your rings. You’ll also need either a tension or café rod to hang the Roman Blinds, and 2 decorative hooks.
Before you get scared or overwhelmed by the process, it’s worth mentioning that shopping for the materials is the difficult part; the rest is quite simple. Wash, dry and iron your fabric. Hem all 4 sides, but remember to leave a pocket at the top for the rod. Sew rings at each bottom corner and at equal intervals. Cut the cording in half, then tie each piece to the bottom corner ring. String the cording straight up through the rest of the rings. When you pull on the cording, it should draw the Roman Blind up. Install your hanging hardware. The decorative hooks should be placed about halfway down your window. After you hang your new Roman Blind, you can tie your cording to the hook at your preferred shade height. This is how to make roman blinds!
