Futon is a Japanese term referring to the mattress used for sleeping. This mattress is filled with padded and pliable materials in order to make the futons soft and comfortable for use. Usually, the Japanese lay their futons on the floor during the night time, and they keep it during the day when not used. Since they are folded and stowed away in the morning, they are great space-saver, especially for those people living in a small house or apartment.
However, the Western culture adapted the traditional Japanese futons. Now, modern and westernized futons became popular, and many people loved how they were made. If you are not aware of the differences between a traditional and modern futon cover, then below are some checklists that you can use to spot a modern futon from not.
Traditional Futon Checklist:
- If you find a futon with two parts- the padded mattress underneath and the bed cover above, that is a traditional futon.
- You cannot find metal or wooden frames attached to it, only the mattress itself.
- It is not very thick, usually just around 6 to 8 inches.
- It is only used for sleeping.
- It can be folded and hidden in a closet when not used.
Modern Futon Checklist:
- Modern futons are only made with one-piece mattress. The futon covers can be removed, replaced, and sold separately.
- The futon is attached to a metal or wooden frame.
- The modern futon is very thick; often it can have a width of more than 10 inches.
- It can be converted to a bed for sleeping, and as a couch for sitting or resting.
- It cannot be folded since it is made with several layers of padding.
- It can be part of the house as beautiful furniture.
- They are available in full and queen sizes, as well as in different colors such as the Red Futon Cover and the Blue Futon Cover.
There are several differences between the two futons. Yet, whether modern or not, they are still an excellent way to save space around your house. The choice to buy which one from them will depend upon your personal preference and purpose. Now, you go ahead and pick your favorite futon and futon cover.
