You might think that recessed lighting is just for the entryway and hallway, but many people are starting to use it in the bedroom as well. These lights are much more versatile than you might think, and with some careful planning and preparation, you can use them successfully in your bedroom. Recessed can lighting is a great way to get light in the exact places in the bedroom that you want it, and in this post I will give you some tips for doing just that!
It’s important to note that recessed lighting doesn’t work in every home. There needs to be enough clearance in the ceiling to fit the light fixture, with some extra space above. If loose pack insulation is used in the attic, IC rated light fixtures have to be used to reduce the chance of fire. Attic fires do an extreme amount of damage to the home, so take every step possible to prevent them.
One of my favorite uses for recessed lighting in the bedroom is as a replacement for night stand lamps. This is extremely luxurious, and the type of setup that you would find in high-end custom homes. In fact, you can even create your own custom look with customizable recessed lighting trims. What happens is there are recessed lights above the night stand on each side of the bed and a dimmer switch on individual light switches to control it. Custom wiring is needed to get the light switches hooked up, but it isn’t a difficult project at all for an electrician.
Another cool installation is around the perimeter of the room. Again, these should be on a dimmer switch so you can adjust the “mood” of the lighting easily. This works great to make small bedrooms feel much bigger than they actually are, and provides balanced light throughout the room.
Recessed lighting fixtures work in many rooms other than the hall. Spend time planning out your lighting layout for maximum success. Installing recessed lights is the kind of thing that you have to get right the first time or you’re left with big holes in the ceiling, so plan carefully!
