You hear the phrase tossed around all the time – “I just love my pillow top mattress cover” or “pillow top mattresses are the only way to go,” but just what is a pillow top mattress? A pillow top mattress can be any type of mattress (firm or soft) that has an added layer of cushion on top called a pillow top. The idea is that the pillow top gives the mattress added comfort and cushion while stile offering support below this layer. While a pillow top mattress can be great, particularly for heavier people that require additional cushioning, there are some things you should know before diving right in to purchase one. These mattresses aren’t for everyone and they require a certain level of ongoing maintenance to keep them performing their best. Read on for some solid tips on buying and maintaining a pillow top mattress.

While pillow top mattresses can offer one of the most comfortable sleep experiences, the simple truth is that these mattresses must be maintained to keep their cushy feel. If the mattress itself isn’t rotated about once per month it will tend to form depressions wherever you lay, and over time these depressions will reveal the coils and internal mattress structure beneath. Ultimately, you will be left with an uncomfortable mattress that no longer offers the comfort that it once did. This is a process that can happen in just a few short years if you’re not careful. For this reason alone, a pillow top mattress or pillow top mattress pad may not be the best choice for most people, particularly since there are other options available to soften the surface such as foam mattress toppers. Of course, it’s important to rotate all mattresses and not just pillow tops, since they can all succumb to sagging in short order. Manufacturers are aware of this and have structured their warranties carefully to protect them against consumers that don’t regularly rotate their mattresses. While it can be a pain, the simple solution is to bite the bullet and rotate on a regular basis, at least once per month.

The best bet in terms of cost effectiveness would be to purchase a pillow top mattress topper rather than a full fledged pillow top mattress. By doing so you will reap the same benefits offered by a pillow top, but won’t need to worry about the topper itself degrading. If it does degrade or begin to sag, simply remove it and purchase another one. You’ll be out the cost of the topper, which generally run between $150-200 instead of an entire mattress, which can run into the thousands of dollars.
