If you are pregnant for the first time then you’re likely finding the amount of products geared towards parents for both during pregnancy and the zillion baby products for once baby arrives to be somewhat overwhelming. Do you really need all this stuff? Well, some of it is helpful, some is a waste of time and money, and there are other items you’ll find you simply can’t live without. So why would anyone need a special pillow? As my husband would say, what’s wrong with the pillow you already have? Of course, he doesn’t know what it’s like to have another human stretching you beyond belief, kicking you through the night plus the hormones and added weight that create discomfort you’d never before imagined. Don’t get me wrong, pregnancy is a wonderful thing and I actually enjoy that phase very much, but I also like my sleep! Maternity pillows help one to get a better night’s sleep even as the growing belly creates discomfort. Of course, a maternity pillow won’t get rid of frequent trips throughout the night to use the restroom, but it can make you comfortable enough to fall back asleep more easily upon returning to bed.
The maternity body pillow can add precious minutes of sleep, and if you’re trying to stock up before baby arrives every minute counts, right? Instead of getting all your pillows together and stacked correctly, you can easily grab a single pillow to support you in a variety of areas. If you’re anything like me, the number of pillows required can really add up—one for the head, one for the baby/belly, one for the back and a couple for in between the knees. Perhaps the #1 reason for using a maternity pillow should be to allow space for your spouse to sleep in the same bed! Aside from the body pillow, the wedge is also great, especially when you’re belly is sticking straight out in front in front of you (like the way they say it does when you’re carrying a boy, which was true for me).
In conclusion, the benefits of using a maternity pillow are added comfort, decreased quantity of pillows to use, less time spent fumbling with multiple pillows to try and get comfortable, more space for hubby in bed and less aggravation for him while you’re fidgeting around trying to get comfortable with the insane amount of pillows he can’t for the life of him figure out why you need.
