Your pillow is the most important item apart from your mattress when it comes to getting a good night of sleep. I’m astonished at the number of people that spend a fortune on a really high quality mattress, but fail to upgrade their worn out polyester filled pillows in the process. Even worse, there are people that actually buy new polyester filled pillows because they don’t want to spend the extra money on a memory foam or latex pillow. The simple truth is that using the appropriate pillow can have a lasting influence on your ability to rid yourself of annoying back and neck pain. These common ailments are all too often made worse through the selection of inferior pillows.
I was recently faced with the opportunity to upgrade my memory foam pillow when shopping for a new latex mattress. Because we had decided to purchase a latex mattress over a memory foam or spring and coil mattress, I was also interested in what latex pillows had to offer in terms of comfort and support. The mattress store I prefer to shop at, Sleep Train, offers a line of latex foam pillows that come in various levels of firmness. They carry both queen and king sized pillows in both “regular” and “low profile” versions, and within these two profiles there are soft, medium and firm pillows from which to choose. I spent time trying out the different versions while lying on the floor model of the mattress we were about to take home. While all of them were far more comfortable than any polyester filled pillow I have tried, in the end I couldn’t see replacing my memory foam pillow with the latex pillows I had to choose from. My reasoning in personal – I didn’t like the springiness of the latex pillows. They just didn’t “give” as much as my memory foam pillow does. I didn’t end up with a new pillow this time around, but not because I think latex pillows are bad. On the contrary, the specific latex pillows I was trialing simply didn’t align with my individual preferences.
If you’re interested in purchasing a latex pillow I strongly recommend that you head down to your local mattress retailer and try out a few. Lie down on the mattresses at the store and really get a feel for what the pillows have to offer. If possible, consider purchasing from a retailer that offers a generous return policy in case you’re not satisfied with your purchase. You should expect to pay about $50-$75 for a high quality latex foam pillow, which is somewhat less than the cost for a standard memory foam pillow. Like memory foam pillows, a latex pillow should last you many years and will not break down from heavy use or from bunching the pillow together.
