You’ve likely heard the various claims made by mattress companies about whey their mattresses are superior to all the rest. Some manufacturers even use claims from physicians to sell their products – “Our memory foam mattresses are better for your back and joints.” While such aggressive marketing tactics are meant to sell you on a particular type or brand of mattress, the simple fact is that they can make things even more confusing, particularly when you have to sort through the various claims to get an honest review. Fortunately, for those reading this article, I have already been through this process and have chosen the mattress type that I feel is most superior – the latex mattress. Before explaining my decision I think it’s important to state that there isn’t one mattress type that works for all people. As with many things in life, your choice of mattress is a personal decision and depends largely on your physical condition, sleep style and comfort preferences. With that said, I believe that the latex mattress offers the perfect blend of comfort and support, and in terms of longevity, few other mattress types come close to the latex mattress. The following article will explain why latex mattresses are the superior choice and will serve to justify the reason for their recent rise in popularity. In the end I hope I can convince you to consider the latex foam mattress as an option should you be in the market for a new mattress.

Latex mattresses have taken the mattress market by storm and are one of the most popular choices due to their unique supportive properties. Starting in Europe, the latex mattress craze has made its way to the US and beyond and now compares favorably with memory foam mattresses. In fact, latex mattresses are somewhat similar to memory foam mattresses due to their density, which is typically about 4lbs. per cubic foot. It is the density that determines the quality of a latex mattress, as mattresses with a greater density tend to mold more slowly to your body rather than pushing back against it as coils tend to do. Unlike a traditional spring mattress, a latex mattress conforms perfectly to the natural curvature of the body, relieving pressure by distributing it throughout the mattress.

It’s important to understand that most latex mattresses are made primarily from a combination of natural and synthetic latex. Though there are completely natural latex mattresses available, they are typically more expensive than the synthetic versions and may not offer much of an advantage. In fact, there is no evidence to suggest that one version is better than the other in terms of comfort, so the decision really comes down to personal choice. For many people, the cost for a natural latex mattress is worth it, since it is a sustainable resource and doesn’t use synthetic chemicals. Apart from how the latex is derived there is also the issue of how the mattress core is constructed. Currently, latex mattress cores are produced using either the Dunlop method or the Talalay method. Talalay latex mattresses are reputed to have a more consistent cell structure while mattresses created using the Dunlop method are said to be more elastic and springier. Personally, the bed I purchased, the Vera Wang Organic Collection latex mattress, was created using the Talalay method and I must admit that it works quite well for me.

At the end of the day I must admit that I look forward to climbing into bed to experience the unique supportive properties offered by my latex mattress. Never before has a mattress allowed me to relax in the way that my latex mattress has. I find myself sleeping throughout the night and waking up feeling rested and alert. I will continue to recommend latex mattresses as a viable option for anyone in the market for a mattress that is comfortable, supportive and extremely long lasting.
