I remember growing up and sleeping on the bottom bunk of our bunk bed hoping that the top bunk wouldn’t someday give out leaving me hopelessly squished. I can recall the nervousness I felt every time my brother moved, watching the bottom of his mattress bulge with his weight. Fortunately, I survived that trying ordeal and never did get smashed. I didn’t quite understand the reason for it at the time, but the bunk bed really was a great space saving sleep solution. It allowed for me and my brother to share a small room without making it feel cramped by the presence of 2 separate beds. Even better would have been a futon bunk bed, which would have allowed us to have a place to sit during the daytime while still offering the convenience and efficiency of a bunk bed.

A bunk bed with futon is exactly what it sounds like – a traditional futon with a mattress above it. During the daytime the mattress can be folded up into a couch for sitting on and can be made into a mattress for sleeping during the night. All futon bunk beds feature a ladder for climbing in and out of the top bunk, and many feature safety railing to prevent the top sleeper from experiencing a hard and potentially dangerous fall. Apart from the fact that a futon bunk bed can be converted into seating during the daytime, there are a couple of other factors that set it apart from a traditional bunk bed. First, a futon bunk bed is available in a variety of different framing materials; a metal futon bunk bed and a wood futon bunk bed are just two examples. Second, a futon mattress can be purchased to suit just about any sleep and/or comfort preference. Futon mattresses are available in a variety of different firmnesses and thicknesses. Futon mattresses can also be dressed up through the use of a futon cover, which allows the user to match their futon to their home décor.

The typical futon bunk bed costs between $400 and $1,000. On the low end of the price spectrum are basic metal frames while the high end is dominated by fancy woods and finishes. Most consumers would be wise to go with something in the middle, which will offer a great combination of value and visual appeal. For people looking for the ultimate in durability, a metal futon bunk bed frame can’t be beat and would likely be my choice for children.
