In years gone by, the kitchens of country homes had very large, incredibly sturdy and not particularly ornate farmhouse tables. Such a piece of furniture invariably had several uses – the family and farm hands would eat there, children would be taught their lessons and continue to study them independently there and meals would be prepared on that surface. The farmhouse kitchen table would be the primary flat work surface in the heart of the home.

True today as it was yesterday, the kitchen is still the heart of the home and the table therein hosts a variety of activities outside of mealtime; bills are paid there, kids are studying there and friends are sitting together drinking coffee there. Though the activities remain so very similar, the surfaces on which we do these things have changed dramatically. Modern materials and designs have found their way into most homes. But there’s something to be said for the down home feel of a room with a farmhouse table and chairs.

A piece of furniture that was plain and utilitarian a century or two ago is now recognized as having classically simple lines, of being finely crafted and fabricated out of quality materials that will last not just throughout the year, but can be passed down from generation to generation. An antique farmhouse table, handmade with a construction that has allowed for the natural expansion and contraction of solid wood is a quality addition to any home. Characterized by turned legs, a full apron and plank top, such tables may have been painted or varnished, or some combination of both. Sometimes simple designs have been carved into the edges of the farmhouse table, but it is a piece of furniture that is by its very nature simple and utilitarian with the most ornate part frequently being the hand-turned legs. Finding a true antique to fill this space in your home can be an exciting hunt. Finding a piece that fits your aesthetic sense and size requirements also would be an ultimately rewarding endeavor.
