I have lived in this home for ten years now, and have changed very little of the bedroom since I first moved in. The bed is in the same place, the decor is largely the same, and the walls are the same color. I realized a few months ago that it was just getting depressing to have the same layout year after year, and decided to change some things around.

But early in the process I realized how easy it was to make small changes that added up to a much different feel in the room. For example, I have had the same painting hanging up in the bedroom for years. I took it down and was planning, as a first step, to put up some wood shelving instead, giving me a place to set up pictures of the children, or plants, or whatever else. It turns out that this small change has added up to a much different feel in the room, so much so that I decided to not do much else to that area. It’s strange how a small change like that will make this so different.

I also wanted to redesign the bathroom – I had thoughts in the back of my head of replacing the tub, which was going to be quite expensive. But I decided to personalize it instead. We changed the color of the bathroom, redoing the walls with a light blue color, and hanging up pictures from vacations we have taken instead of leaving them sitting in boxes. My wife took some of her older jewelry that happens to match the color, and as a joke set it up on her jewelry display stands that she has on the bathroom sink. It added to the room and we ended up keeping it.
