You might be surprised to learn that over the last five years, working as an interior designer, I am often asked to try and integrate a canopy bed into my clients overall design. I have to say that while I am often asked to add one I rarely do. Many clients have unrealistic expectations of what will and won’t work in their houses. Unless the client has loads of cash and a very swanky large house then a canopy bed is often not appropriate. Too often a client has been sucked in by the glamour of a room they have stayed in at say a hotel and can’t see that recreating the same look in their bedroom will be neigh on impossible.
Here are the most common canopy bed questions we am asked and our responses.
Q. Should I go for a modern or antique style canopy bed?
A. As I mentioned above the answer is often neither! However if your room can accommodate one then it’s usually safer and cheaper to go with a modern design. It will be so much easier, unless you are an avid antique furniture collector, to find other fixtures and fittings to match a modern bed.
Q. Should I build my own Canopy bed?
A. Again the answer is almost always no. The whole point of a canopy bed is to create some grandeur and luxury to your room. Are you a good enough handy man to create this look yourself? I doubt it. I’ve not seen it work really well yet.
Q. What do your think about canopy covers?
A. In case you were wondering, a canopy cover is like a giant mosquito net hung from a loop attached to the ceiling and then draped down over your bed. How do I feel about bed canopies? Not good. This is a poor mans version of a canopy bed and my feeling is that it should be avoided. If you can’t afford the complete look then avoid it all together.
I’m sorry if my answers seem a little negative but I have seen too many canopy design disasters not to answer honestly. Think carefully before going for this look.
