The breakfast nook is not a large room, which means that there is generally not much room for any furniture other than the breakfast nook set. You will also find that breakfast nooks often have many windows so there is not much wall space. These two factors make it hard to decorate your breakfast nook in the same way you would decorate in other rooms. Therefore, you need to be more creative and think of ways to use utilitarian items in the room as decorating elements.
The first example would be the breakfast nook set itself. You can paint your breakfast table and chairs a certain color to continue a color scheme from the kitchen. Alternatively, you could install a tile tabletop with tile that match the back splash tile design in your kitchen. Using stencils on the sides of the table or on the back of breakfast chairs or breakfast benches that match the stencils on your cabinet doors is another way to tie the two rooms together. In addition, you can use chair cushions and corner breakfast nook bench cushions as decorating elements. You can get a splash of color that way if you are not ready to change your furniture just yet.
A second utilitarian item you can use in the breakfast nook as a decorating element is the window treatments. Almost every breakfast nook or eat in kitchen has many windows and you need to be able to manage the sunlight during different times of day with window treatments. Blinds are probably the most common because they are easy to use and still let in enough light to be able to enjoy the sun as much as you want to. What many decorators do is to install a valance or heavy drapes that are meant to be tied back permanently as decorative items. You can choose patterns or colors for your window treatments that bring out the colors in your kitchen counter tops or match the place mats or seat cushions at your breakfast table.
