Remember when fitted wardrobes were built to last rather than just to save you a few dollars? These days you can buy a cheap wardrobe for the bedroom made from laminated melamine that will only set you back a few dollars and it will do an adequate job of holding your clothes for a few years. The only problem is that these types of wardrobes tend to look rather cheap. You can be pretty confident that after a relatively short period of time of constant everyday use, the wardrobe is going to begin to fall apart.
The alternative is the kind of wardrobe that people have been making and buying for years; wardrobes made from solid oak or pine. Either of these types of wardrobes are going to cost you a bit more but they are also going to be more likely to stand up to the rigors of daily use.
There’s a good reason why there are still more antique oak wardrobes floating around the place than you can poke a stick at. After many, many years of service these wardrobes are still solid and in great condition. Because they are constructed from natural wood grain, they tend to create a warm and inviting feeling in whatever room they are placed in.
There really is no point in skimping when it comes to buying a bedroom wardrobe. The important factors to look for when purchasing a wardrobe have to do with how it’s constructed. Avoid wardrobes with staples and poorly fitting joints. You also don’t want to see cracks between pieces of wood and you certainly don’t want the wardrobe to wobble when you give it a shake at one corner. All of these factors are characteristic to a wardrobe that is unlikely to last you for very long.
