How to Panel Your Bathroom

Wall panels add a handsome layer of character to your bathroom and are custom built to suit your bathroom decor.  For the home that will have floor to ceiling square panels or wainscoting covering the bottom half of the wall, bathroom paneling makes a strong statement.

Paneling is beneficial in protecting walls from the high humidity levels in the bath and shower as well as improving the look of the room.  For an inexperienced do-it-your-selfer, hire a professional contractor to install the paneling and leave the curtain panels for yourself.  However, if you are confident in doing the work, follow these simple steps:

-Decide exactly what the finished paneling should look like.  Draw a sketch.  Then measure carefully and add 10% to the amount of paneling needed.

-Choose MDF paneling if possible.  It is less expensive than real wood, designed for moist areas, and comes in an endless variety of styles.

-Measure for the baseboards and any crown molding being installed.  If possible, buy everything at the same time.  It is convenient having all materials on the job site.

-If the house is old, check the quality of the drywall or sheet rock.  Installing bathroom wall paneling over weak walls may cause sagging or bowing.  The same is true if there is a question about the integrity of the walls in a newer home.

-Before hanging panels.  Mark off the distance to center between each stud.

-Panels should be screwed or nailed and glued to the wall studs for best hold.  Be sure to place two panel edges per stud, and secure them at the top and bottom.

-Paint the baseboards or molding before placing them over the already painted paneling.  If using real wood, be sure to add additional layers of varnish to protect against the moisture.

With proper measurements, bathroom paneling will look stunning when you’re through.
